ログローニョでの中一日はワイナリー訪問をしようと考えていたので、サラゴサで飲んだモスカテルをネットで探してその産地サダシアが特急で一駅のCalahorraにあることを突き止め、宿のお姉さんにお願いしてMaetierraワイナリーに電話して見学について聞いてもらうことにした。ネットで見つけた電話先はメーカーのワイナリーではなく営業オフィスだったようで、いずれにせよ見学は受け付けていないという返事だった。そこでツアーは元々の計画通りバスでアーロに出掛けることにした。
リオハワインの中心地アーロはバスで約1時間、到着したターミナルから歩いて行けるワイナリーとしては鉄道駅方向に3-4軒並んでいるビスカヤ通りが狙い目。まずMUGAという構えの立派なワイナリー（ここは基本的に予約制）に入ってみたが、ツアーは朝の10時半に出てしまうので当日は不可とのこと。仕方ないのでショップでの有料テイスティングをしてみた。ボトルには結構強気のプライスタグが付いているが、特に印象に残るワインはなく、ここは儲かっていて羽振りが良さそうだが、総じて事務的だ。我々が次のワイナリーに移動すべく退出するのと入れ違いに中国人と思われる3人組が入ってきた。
続いて隣はTONDONIAで、名前はチェックしておいたボデガスなのでやや期待はある。構内に入ると人影がなく、一番奥のショップに行き着いた。テイスティング･エリアは凝った作りだが、何となく第六感的印象が薄かったので人を捜すより次のワイナリーに先に進むとこにした。
ボデガスALTAは入って右手の建物を覗くとそこは事務所らしく、出てきた女性社員に反対側の建屋に連れて行かれた。ちょうどツアーを始めたところらしく、2人の米国女性を相手にガイド役の若手スタッフが英語で説明中だ。我々も首尾良くそこに滑り込み、スペインぞっこんの米国チームとも意気投合して極めてアットホームで楽しいツアーとなった。リオハのラベルが許されるのは条件を満たした赤ワインだけと教えられた。ここでのツアー料金€10はワインを購入すれば戻すとのこと。
The second day in Logrono was supposed to be a winery tour
entirely, and as we couldn't forget the Maetierra moscatel that we had in
Zaragoza, we checked the net and found Sadacia area was actually in Calahorra,
the next stop with an express train, and we asked the assistant in our hostel
to make a phone call to find some visit detail. Unfortunately, they offered no
tours in their winery, and we had no other choices but the original bus ride
to Haro.
Haro is the center of Rioja, and about 1 hour from Logrono by
bus. If you walk to wineries like us, the most efficient would be Vizcaya
Avenue toward Haro train station where 3 or 4 bodegas line up. We first went to
MUGA through their sophisticated entrance with a train. The tours are basically
on reservation basis, and they already started at 10:30 in the morning
unfortunately, so we had tastings in the shop (the fee depends on your
combination). The price tag on the bottles tended to be aggressive, and their
business appeared to be in good shape, but the general attitude was like
typical majors a bit square. As we go out for the next bodegas, a group of
three Asians, seemingly Chinese, came in.
TONDONIA is the neighbor and I had checked their presence with
certain expectation. We saw nobody in the facility and ended up into the shop with
a gorgeous tasting area. My sixth sense was not so positive with their bottles though,
and thus we moved forward to the next bodegas instead of further looking for some one.
The third bodegas was ALTA. We first entered the building on
the left. It was their office, and a lady took us to the winery area on the
other side. A young staff was talking to two American ladies in English, and we
could merge ourselves to the group smoothly. The ladies were very much into
Spain, wine and everything, we had a good time throughout the friendly,
family-like tour. We learned that “Rioja” label was only allowed to certified
red wines. The €10 tour fee will be refunded if you buy wines there.
