Japanese Farm Food

良い本を見つけた。著者のナンシーさんはスタンフォード出身の才女だと思うが、来日して英会話の先生をしていた時の生徒だった埼玉の鶏卵生産農家に嫁いで以来20数年、義祖母を始めとする家族から和食文化の伝統を学び、そこで会得した広範な和食レシピだけでなく、食材や料理法についても体系的に解説した本を出版した。「日本の田舎料理」と題されたこの本には身近な家庭的料理も網羅されており、料理を通して日本の食文化に触れることができる英語の書物という点で素晴らしい一冊だと思う。そのことを彼女に伝えておこうと一筆メールを啓上したら、すぐに返礼があった。実はきっかけは彼女の生活ぶりを追跡するテレビ番組で、それに魅入られて早速Amazonに発注したのだが、1月5日朝フジテレビの新報道2001でも少し登場するらしい。話は変わるが、ひとりフレンチの食事に至った彼女の3.11東京体験は興味深い。

I came across with a wonderful book. The author, Nancy Singleton Hachisu, is a Stanford graduate and married to a Japanese chicken egg farmer more than 20 years ago whom she met as a student of English conversation. Ever since, she learned from grandma-in-law and other family members variety of traditional Japanese cooking. The book covers a wide range of cooking including popular family dishes, and even covers the ingredients and the methods analytically. This is a book written in English that enables you to access our culture through food and cooking styles, and I think it is very valuable. I sent an e-mail to the author as I wanted to express what I felt, and she immediately wrote me back. She will be appearing in a TV program called “Shinhodo 2001” in January 5 morning. By the way, her own experience on 3/11 in Tokyo ending up in a highly reputed French restaurant was interesting.
